ESV daily verse

Lift up your eyes on high and see: who created these? He who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of his might, and because he is strong in power not one is missing. (Isaiah 40:26, ESV) (Listen)

small towns

September 28th, 2003

so let’s talk about quaint little small towns. i happen to believe that they are one of the coolest entities on the planet. every one of them is the same, and yet every one of them is different. you always know what to expect when going to one. there’s always a “Main Street” which is also the site of the “historic” section of the town. rows of businesses line Main Street, with places selling antiques, a cafe with a waitress named Flo that has amazing homemade pies, a barbershop with the rotating blue, white, and red barber’s pole outside and the town “general store” that sells………general things.

and it’s these towns that make America great. the people that live there are living the true American Dream. they haven’t sold out on what they hold dear for perhaps a better life, or at least more luxury, in the big city (or even the suburbs). they stay in their little towns doing whatever it takes to get by, they know everyone around them, and they’re happy. just take a walk down Main Street. you’ll find an older man in a rocking chair somewhere on the sidewalk. his face will be weathered, his hair will be gray, but he’ll have more twinkle and life in his eyes than any 30 year old executive that you meet. or talk to Flo in the cafe. sure she may tell you how she’s only working this job to provide for her kids at home, but deep down inside there’s no place she’d rather be. so she stays in order to make sure that her “regulars” get their “regulars” and that life can go on in this happy town in the same way that it has for ages.

and it’s a simple life, really. these people aren’t worried about the troubled economy. they’re not worried about skirmishes in far away places. the only worries these fine people have from day to day is what the weather will bring, and who the high school will have to play this friday night. i think i would like to live life like that.
